Skål Beer Hall, located in a Seattle neighborhood rich with Scandanavian ties, was in need of a brand. It aimed to build a brand that blends Nordic traditions with modern appeal to drive interest and increase brand recognition, all while keeping an eye toward merchandise.
The beer hall was working toward an authentic Nordic experience, emphasizing a friendly, welcoming warmth while also being modern and fresh.
The icon was very important here - this is the piece that would be used on various types of merchandise. The goal? Something welcoming, something simple, yet something that reference both Scandanavian pride and the PNW's love of beer. This is how the Hop Viking was born
I was given the opportunity to design the outdoor signage - a challenge that I was incredibly excited to tackle.
Every aspect of the sign was thought out to blend with the bar interior and stand out among a crowded street of bars and restaurants. Squared steel supports the burnt/blackened wood signage, with the carved negative space highlighting the name and logo.
The initial crowdfunding swag–hats, t-shirt, and glassware–was so successful that the merchandise is still selling strong years later. Everything from logo'd, hand-crafted mugs to stickers, coozies, masks, shirts, and more continue to be shipped out across the country.
